Whilst bariatric surgery such as gastric band or gastric bypass might not be right for all morbidly obese people, the experiences of these patients testifies that the benefits can be significant. Morbid obesity is a major public health risk, and obesity-related diseases cost the United Kingdom National Health Service (NHS) £500 million a year There are varying opinions of bariatric surgery and their thoughts regarding the provision of these services in the NHS (free of cost to the individual patient). Sixty-three surgeons held the opinion that bariatric surgery should not be funded by the NHS. The reasons they gave were that: obesity is a psychological in origin.
